As pet owners, caretakers, and clinicians you want your dogs, cats, and family to be safe and healthy. The best way to accomplish this is to keep track of their health and environment through routine wellness exams by a veterinarian, including regular fecal examinations.
A common health risk in dogs and cats and their owners is parasites. Early diagnosis for the presence and identity of intestinal parasite is vital. Veterinarians are on the front line of preventing transmission of pet-associated zoonotic parasite infections because of their knowledge of the potential risks to the pet, owners, and community. Several types of internal parasites infect animals of any age: puppies, kittens, and shelter dogs being the biggest victims. While many can be asymptomatic carriers of parasites, others become extremely ill. This will identify a resistance to the anthelmintic used, as currently reported in hookworms and roundworms in dogs.
